recently no elected republicans elected a white house screening of "lincoln" last month. had mitch mcconnell, john boehner, lamar alexander attended, they were all invited, they would have joined not only nancy pelosi, harry reid but steven spielberg, tommy lee jones. as tip o'neill famously said about his political foe, ronald reagan, love the sinner. hate the sin. when president reagan would invite the speaker, tip o'neill over to the white house for drinks and raise a glass to one another. there's no shortage of parties planned around inauguration

to say, neil at his second inaugural as he put his hand on martin luther king, jr.'s bible and lincoln, i expect him to look american people in the face. ask not what you can do for your country, ask what your country and government can do for you. this is awful. we $16.4 trillion debt and mounting. the president's dared republicans to call him on spending problem. folks if you don't think you will have jobs now, you will not have them in another four years. that is the problem. neil: think about it, whether you're on the right or left, we have a very brief honeymoon period, window, in any new administration to attack something that might be controversial and certainly, let's say reining in entitlements. maybe slowing the growth of the military, anathema to republicans. it fits that description. but if you don't do it in that immediate period, you never do. and so it is put off for another few years. that is why i'm reading into these preparations for the inauguration and wondering, where is the talk of this? it might pop up in the president's speech. it might pop up in remarks i get out

to go with lincoln's second inaugural. >> awesome. >> 1865. >> i remember that. it was a good one. >> as i said, the video footage is a little grainy. the audio wasn't there. i was thinking of something else. there's a moment i think is kind of worth sharing because it's rare to encapsulate the failure of a presidency in to one day, the inaugural day. inauguration day. i would say that would be jimmy carter. whatever you think of jimmy carter's politics, the ideology, it wasn't a very successful presidency. and the roots of it sort of evident on the day of the inauguration for two reasons. first, his staff kind of bungled the, you know, showing proper deference to the speaker of the house, tip o'neill, for instance. crucially important guy for getting the carter program through congress. he was miffed because he wasn't treated well with tickets to inaugural festivities and balls and that sort of thing. the leadership of the democratic party in congress, carter won the nomination in an end and around them understanding the new primary rules before they did. he didn't show proper de

a very exclusive club next week, with members including washington, jefferson, lincoln, roosevelt, when he is nicaraguaed e inaugurated as the president of the united states. massive preparations are well under way here in the nation's capital. the whole thing kicks off tomorrow with a national day of service. chelsea clinton will be the honorary chair for that. and because january 20th, the inauguration day falls on a sunday this year, the official swearing in of president obama will take place in a private ceremony at the white house as it has to on a sunday. monday is the big day, folks. this all kicks off with a church service at st. john's church, just across the street from the white house. then on to the public. the swearing in here where hundreds of thousands are expected to turn out on what will be, i'm sure, a chilly washington day, from capitol hill to the national mall, pennsylvania avenue, for the inaugural parade. i will be there. i'm so excited. i'll be there in the thick of things. of course, many, many -- many, many of our cnn crews will be there as well. you can catch
